Claude Cowork is useful to explore when you want AI to work through a task using files or connected information and produce an output you can review. Start with one document task. Add live accounts or recurring work after you understand the result and the access involved.

This guide is open to read without an email address. It includes a fictional practice pack and an expected-output checklist. The exercise is authored for this guide; it is not a published product benchmark or a claim about time saved.

What do you need to use Claude Cowork?

Anthropic currently lists Cowork on paid Claude plans. For local files and computer access, use an up-to-date Claude Desktop app on macOS or Windows. Availability also depends on the surface and your organisation's settings. Follow the current official getting-started instructions for your account.

Check the price and included usage in your account before subscribing. A fixed Rand figure in a guide can become misleading as plans and exchange rates change. Include any extra usage or connected-service costs in your decision.

For this exercise, use only the fictional text below. You do not need to connect email, a client folder or a live calendar.

Your first task: prepare a meeting brief

Download the fictional practice pack, or copy the source text below into a plain-text document. Keep it separate from real work. If using a local folder, choose a dedicated practice folder and keep the original unchanged.

FICTIONAL PRACTICE MATERIAL
Source A: Calendar extract
Tuesday 15 September 2026, 10:00–10:30 SAST.
Meeting with [SUPPLIER] to discuss the revised proposal.

Source B: Email, Monday 14 September
[SUPPLIER] says: I look forward to Tuesday at 10:30.
Please send your questions about proposal v2 beforehand.

Source C: Proposal v2
Delivery can begin 1 October if agreed.
The final price has not yet been confirmed.

Source D: Owner's note
Ask whether delivery can be split into two stages.
Do not confirm a start date yet.

Open Cowork, attach the practice document or grant access to the dedicated folder, and give it this instruction:

Use only the supplied fictional practice material.
Prepare a one-page meeting brief with:
1. Purpose of the meeting.
2. Facts, each labelled with its source letter.
3. Conflicts or missing information to resolve.
4. Questions for the meeting.
5. Draft follow-up tasks for my review.

Do not infer missing prices or resolve conflicting times yourself.
Do not send messages, change my calendar or overwrite sources.
Keep the output as a draft. Show the proposed approach first.

Review the proposed approach before letting it proceed. Instructions describe the intended task; use the product's permissions to control access and actions. Anthropic's safety guidance explains why files and websites can contain instructions that try to divert an assistant from your task.

How do you know whether the result is useful?

The exact wording can vary. Check the substance against these expected findings:

CheckExpected finding
Meeting timeFlag 10:00 in source A versus 10:30 in source B. Ask for confirmation.
PriceState that the final price is unconfirmed in source C.
Delivery date1 October is conditional, and source D says not to confirm it.
QuestionInclude the request about splitting delivery into two stages.
ActionsProvide draft tasks only. Do not send anything or change the appointment.

If the output misses the time conflict, keep that correction in the instructions and retry with a different example. A neat document can still omit the detail that matters. Record what you had to check and correct before deciding whether the task is ready for real use.

Move from a practice task to your work

Choose a task whose sources you are authorised to share. Agree the inputs, output location, reviewer and action permissions. Use copies for the first trial, keep originals available and avoid granting access to an entire client or personal document collection.

A connected app is another access decision. Check what it can read or change and how to disconnect it. For a team, involve the person who manages accounts and information access. A library of approved documents also needs a named owner to remove stale versions.

Can Cowork run a briefing on a schedule?

Anthropic's current scheduled-task documentation says tasks run remotely, including when the computer is asleep. Scheduled tasks use connected tools and files saved to the Claude account; they cannot be tied to a local computer folder.

After a manual task works reliably, open Scheduled, choose New task and define the task and cadence. Confirm the time zone, accessible sources and output. Review the first runs and pause the schedule if the inputs or result are wrong. Local-file work in an ordinary Cowork session still needs the desktop app available.

Do not assume that creating a Cowork schedule also creates a WhatsApp delivery connection. That delivery channel needs its own supported setup. For that distinction, read the WhatsApp assistant guide.

What if the result is incomplete or the task fails?

  • Wrong or missing source: check which files or connectors the session could actually access.
  • Unclear output: show the headings and an example of the detail you need.
  • Invented certainty: require an explicit list of unknowns and verify it against the sources.
  • Usage limit: review account usage and narrow the task before choosing a different plan.
  • Repeated corrections: reconsider the task or source preparation instead of endlessly adding instructions.

A useful setup earns its place through repeated use. I can help choose the first task, configure it, practise with you and keep it current. For shared document work, the public Legal Library shows how to separate sources, drafts and review.
